Edspace Event: The Brightlemon Bake Off

Earlier this week, BrightLemon bought their own version of The Great British Bake Off to their co-working space, Edspace, in an effort to raise money for those affected by the recent UK terror attacks. Several members of Edspace spent the weekend getting messy in their oven mitts and putting their baking books to good use for the fun-filled, flavourful competition.

A fun-filled fundraising event

Naturally, everyone at BrightLemon felt deeply affected and saddened by the tragic terror attacks that have struck the UK in the last month, especially with the London incident being so close to home. We wanted to know what we could do to help. This is how the BrightLemon team stumbled upon the idea of a bake-off style fundraiser in aid of The UK Solidarity Fund.

The idea was that anyone at Edspace could enter the baking competition, in an attempt to win a prize, and then all their cakes would be sold by the slice as a way to raise money.

The UK Solidarity Fund was set up by The British Red Cross Society to help those affected or traumatised by terrorism in the UK. The charity was established in aid of victims and their families, but also as an effort to show the sense of solidarity that people are upholding in the face of these terrorist attacks. So far, the Just Giving page has managed to raise £151,142.

What better way to show support and solidarity than bringing the Edspace community together for some sweet treats, socialising and selfless giving?

The Bake-Off

The BrightLemon team were incredibly pleased with the turnout of cakes and competitors for the bake-off; We had a whopping total of 12 cakes to judge! Give or take a couple of cakes that were store bought (it’s the thought that counts), there was more than enough cake for all of the employees within the workspace to grab a slice of the action.


All of the bake-off judges were seriously impressed by the amount of effort and hard work that the contestants put into their creations. There was a variety of different shapes, sizes, and colours – a mirror of the wonderfully diverse co-working space that makes up Edspace.

The team were also secretly delighted that many of the bakers fully embraced the ‘BrightLemon Bake-Off’ event name and brought in lemon-themed cakes! Perhaps this was a tactical attempt to sway the judges (and it may have worked – who knows?). But, nonetheless, it was Lemon Drizzle galore without any complaints.

The Winners

With the 33 degree heat wave hitting the office, our contestants had a bittersweet taste of the conditions in the real Great British Bake Off tent. And the warm climate certainly took a toll on the bakes, with a Lemon Mousse Cake sagging slightly. But, fortunately, a little melting didn’t stop it from claiming the prize for Best Tasting Bake!

It was a close call between two entries and a tough decision to make when choosing the winner for Best Looking Bake. But the judges decided that a tall and handsome three-layer Walnut, Ginger and Carrot Cake would be the one to take the prize home. With a uniquely tasty set of pretty pink Rose, Pistachio and Cardamom Cupcakes claiming first place for Best Effort/Most Creative Bake.

The BrightLemon Bake-Off saw the generosity and goodwill of the Edspace community come out in full-force, as people made hearty donations for humble, homemade cakes.

It’s thanks to these gestures that the bake sale was able to raise over £100 – showing the event to be a total success, raising much more money than originally anticipated. It also proved that Edspace has some secret Star Bakers of its very own, with a great deal of talent in and outside of the educational department.

Feedback from attendees of the event has been extremely positive, with the Operations Manager at Edspace, James Frappell, saying:

“The standard of baking was really good with some signature bakes that could easily rival the great Mary Berry. I know the Edspace community enjoyed the event massively and it was fantastic to see our companies come together to raise money for such a good cause. Credit must go to BrightLemon for all their hard work in setting it up, we can’t wait for the next one!”

We would like to thank all of the bakers who entered and those who made donations, and would also like to give a very special congratulations to the winners; Anjulie Truong from Edspace, Aaron Booth from Teach Pitch and Bhagirathi Shah from Tutors United.

BrightLemon feel proud to say that we work within an environment filled with caring, considerate and charitable individuals, who are actively contributing to making the world a better place. We look forward to our next exciting adventure within the Edspace workspace.
